A Balancing Act....

Disclaimer: I acknowledge that no one has asked me about this.... ;-)

As my third novel is developing I look for patterns. The novels are all so different. But I know they can't be at some skeletal level. My inclinations always play out in a pattern at some point. Not formulaic - don't worry. Just human. As always, please bear with me and follow me through this current narcissistic avoidance of real writing. This thing I call... the Blog Update.

The plot ideas that come to me are so large - or grow large in scope of ideas, time, and geography. I enjoy digging out depth in character development...but in such a way as to complement the story as it progresses. That is the idea at any rate.

Balance, the hope of it and the work of it. The realness of it. It feels to me in the writing of the longer narrative that anything less or more than balance (in these general concepts of character and plot) would be insipid.

For me, character and plot are the context. And the cultural/physical landscape is a prominent feature. The landscape in the way it works to inform the characters lives and is impacted by those same lives...this exchange between the character and his place and time can lead to change in either. Or simply as a character and his reflection in the stream of his world.

I tend to like to bring cultures together subtly and violently. I like them to clash or mix, and to learn.

The best result for me is not writing a good story. Or even an amazing and incredible story. But writing a good-enough story - no more or less. Anything else, for me, is true mediocrity. You see, my hope is to captivate and engage the reader. That the reader always has enough...not too little or too much. Because each reader creates a whole new novel - particular to their experiences and inclinations and imagination. Isn't that cool? My novel Unseen is only one story, especially visually. Your reading of it changes it - makes it new and different in ways I cannot.

The story is incomplete in potential without the engaged creative reader. The paradox, the sublime goal of 'good-enough'.

Coincidence? Maybe....

Have you read UNSEEN by Mark Graham? Mark - not Heather and not Jack;-) I had no idea so many Unseen novels would be written by Grahams.

OPEN LETTER For Adoptive Families- A Novel Idea

Hello Adoption Blogger!

Thank you for taking a moment to read about this new fundraising project for adoptive families!

My name is Mark Graham and I have written and published my second novel entitled Unseen. This novel really is my best effort because it is very personal to me in setting and circumstance. Though it is not our story, it carries the inspiration of our time in Ukraine adopting our daughter. I have a dream for it to be a vehicle of ministry for adoptive families. Because of this goal, I have self-published this particular novel and have taken two years with Unseen to insure the highest quality result.

The idea is to provide the eBooks (Kindle, Nook, and IPad) to adoptive families or organizations as a fundraiser for them.  This is a product that they can offer on their blogs free when supporters donate to them. Or they can sell it themselves as a fundraiser if they like.

This is truly a captivating and compelling read. Something supporters would readily tell their friends about and point others to the place where they received it. And so on.

I imagine that through the entertainment of this novel, Unseen, readers will get a fresh and real feel of Ukraine. The reader will gain a deeper empathy for the children there (or anywhere) and their parent’s journey to adopt them.

If you are interested, I would love to send you a free copy of Unseen to review in whichever ebook format you prefer. Just email me at bhistaff@bumblebeehouseink.com or mark@bumblebeehouseink.com for your copy or to answer any questions you may have.

Please tell anyone who you think could benefit from this project.

We would love to be a small participant of bringing together as many families as possible.
Thank you again for your time.

Sincerely,

Mark Graham

UNSEEN story synopsis:
Martin and Jenny Johnson chose to do something different with their vacation and traveled to an orphanage in Southern Ukraine with a team. Once there, the childless couple fell in love with a little girl, Oksana, and made steps to adopt her. But they soon met with mysterious resistance to the adoption and the child went missing for the rest of their time there. Martin remained in Ukraine to pursue Oksana while Jenny worked from America. Days turned to weeks, and then months. With the help of his taxi driver Dima and Dima's friend Sasha, Martin learned more than he expected.  Neither could have imagined the strange twists and turns that would soon arise. Martin would come to find the depths of a father's love he had never known hidden within himself.

SOON...VERY SOON

Hey Folks!

This business stuff is taking a little longer than I anticipated. But I honestly expect that the new novel  UNSEEN and the new re-release of LAND RUN is just 2 weeks from now.

I have the copyrights and ISBN, etc. completed and just some site construction and business type stuff left for BUMBLEBEE HOUSE INK.

The vision for the future is to assist new writers and produce more (great read ;-) eBook novels (unhindered by ANY restrictions of formula requirements and such that is sometimes common to the general publishing industry).

Pass the creative quality on to you! :-)

Anyhow, please stay tuned in.

Thanks,

Bumblebees and Reviews....

Hey all,

Bumblebee House Ink - received the first testimonial for the site. I appreciate all the great reviews from readers on Amazon and elsewhere. This review really hit the heart of the intent of the novel and so fun to read (a very good writer).

Bumble bee House Ink is a copywriting site (and future publishing house...if all goes right. Stay tuned.)

Read Land Run! Here author Mark Graham took me somewhere I did not know I wanted to go and introduced me to a town of people with whom I was taken aback to find so intriguing. Through Land Run I felt the town. I grasped the people-- I mean truly got them. That is because Graham not only let me inside of their heads but drew me to their hearts, their motives. And that made me root for some I might have disdained otherwise. You read Land Run with an anticipation of the "rising above" moments. Those moments are there, mixed with the grief , the aches, the injustices and the glimpses of fulfillment. Shady business dealings and an offbeat old man lure you to the story because Graham makes it all real and sometimes raw. Such is great fiction, and this is why Land Run works.

The Shack....Before

I finally got around to emptying this old shack behind our house. The original structure is about 200 years old. It  sat on the property of our neighbor who has the 1803 plantation house. When I think about it - at one time just about everything as far as you could see sat on their property ;-)

The last owner was in our house for 50 years (the house is 1936). He used this shack to reload shotgun shells and collect whiskey bottles stored in the cabinet.

Anyhow, this is the future 'writing cottage'. I'll update some posts as the work on it progresses. Have a photo of the cleaning crew below...amazing what some people will do for a milkshake. :-)

Have a great day and please check back for updates.

Perspectives and Expectations....

A couple days ago I was walking the dog with my 12 year old daughter. The dog is a very large puppy - just 9 months old. He is full of energy and the fastest of his all the hound breed - Redbone Coonhound. But again, just a pup.

So I told my daughter, "Okay, let's just see what he can do!"

I am pretty fast, as older men go. So I took the leash and sprinted full out. I was flying (knowing full well I would pay for it later). But it was worth it to complete the experiment.

At the top of my speed I looked down to the dog - to check out his top-speed form.

Um,...he was trotting, a medium trot,....looking about at this and that. As if out for a stroll. :-)

Oh well. We got a laugh out of it.

What was I thinking?!  Wait...this might be an analogy for other times in life...in some way...maybe.

BTW - I am editing the next novel. Please click above at an excerpt of it (chapter two - turned into a stand-alone short story).

Have a great day!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I heard this from 4 of my 5 children a few days ago -. 4 days until Christmas!

I remember that excitement - don't you? It was great. I am determined to catch some of that from them. Recapture it.

You know - I have discussed my faith with so many over the years (as it comes up). And what is most stunning to me is the total logic of God coming as a baby. Growing up to become a man tempted in all ways like us. Blowing his nose, excusing himself to go to the restroom. Being tired, frustrated. That is the God of my faith. How cool is that? He gets me.

Then he offers his perfect life as payment for all my failures now and in the future. God came to man...to reconcile their relationship.

Why logical - reasonable? Well, all (all) other religions and non-religions work from a premise of man somehow managing to reconcile himself...by some personal or system of efforts. That is a cool idea, too. And I would never want to derail anyone from their hopes and goals, no matter how lofty they are. But for me, I don't even know where my car keys are half the time...you know? And I am pretty certain that I am not too different from the rest of the human race. Just saying - this faith is something to consider (realistically). If no other reason than it is so wildly different...and logical. And a pretty solid safe place to put your hope.

But whether in the Christian faith or out of it..enjoy the season, your family, friends, and faith. :-)

Merry Christmas!

OUR TIMES...

Land Run is many things (fun but serious, too). The novel covers many aspects of American culture. Land Run delves into a specific culture in a small community in Oklahoma - but with universal application. In our recent times we have seen some results of banks, government, and corporations working together to the benefit of themselves above those of the common man. Character Hint: Cort (bank), Rusty (business), Ted (government). ;-)

Land Run walks though this, our times. And points to the value system that has eroded over time. These values are the foundation of what used to drive every American community and the nation as a whole. The stabilizing factor.

In a sense, the novel is a call to a an awareness of this and to a return to the better values. This is to our good news - unlike Rome, we have something for which we can return to. A foundation (a faith).

America is so unique that most of the world can never know what we have experienced. Why? Simply put - the ingredients necessary ingredients are very specific.

1) Independence was fought against a power that resided across a vast ocean.
2) We killed the former land-owners
3) We had a large collection of white-haired policy-makers that sacrificed all for the notion of freedom and protection of the common man. They did this with the good of subsequent generations in mind (truly these men were freaks of nature)
4) We built the foundations of the nation upon the Bible. Human rights (Life, Liberty, and pursuit of happiness) were the focus of law. Rule of law was then secured.
5) The constitution was then understood by the populous as akin to the Bible. That is, like us, they may not have known the constitution but they knew it stood for what was 'right'. So as the the nation grew - the people could know to get their government in line (by their faith). Slaves should be free, women should vote, good education and opportunities should be available to all people (civil rights), etc.

This was never perfect - treatment of American Indians, Japanese Americans, etc.

The ingredients are what they are. And aspects of them are just unacceptable to most of the world. Or if some are acceptable, their enemy is unfortunately in their own capitol city an in charge of the military.

I have seen and experienced other cultures on the planet. All have a history of just the power of a few over many. The result is very ugly. (one place, Ukraine, is the setting of my second novel).

This just to say - take a moment to wonder at our incredible imperfect country. It is surely a miracle in all of human history. This is not 'jingoism'...it is just the truth.

Have a great weekend!
